TABM NFL Previews

NFLPreview

That fresh cut grass in a sweltering August morning? It’s just the smell of football training camps hitting full swing and NFL preseason kicking off to prepare for the upcoming regular season. No big deal; it’s only the most exciting time of the year for football fans!

It’s also the biggest time of the year here at TABMathletics, when the theories and principles that inspired this website truly get tested in application. Throughout the second half of August, we give an NFL season preview to show how our analysis can give deep insight on some key issues of regression for the upcoming season. This goes beyond what most of you have seen before. We go farther than the basic roster breakdowns and analysis from publications like ESPN.com or Sports Illustrated. We also go deeper than the heavy statistical analysis and game charting from publications like Football Outsiders and Pro Football Focus. In the TABM NFL Previews, we look for regression factors that are almost guaranteed to affect a team’s success to some degree. Using the aforementioned sources as our means of context, we will analyze regression to project each team’s potential outcome for the upcoming season.

Starting after our website reboot in August 2013, we will have three stages of analysis in each NFL preview. First, we will look at eight of the biggest league-wide factors for regression. This involves notable trends from the previous season or huge performances by certain teams or players. These big “factors for regression” may involve multiple statistical points that most likely will regress in the upcoming season. Second, we will look at five factors for regression for each NFL team. This will be split into eight days, with each day focusing on one division. Finally, we will give predictions for the upcoming NFL season, complete with a projected win range for each team and a look at who has the favorable playoff match-ups, given the predicted league standings.

As a bonus, we also saved some highlights articles of analysis from the 2012 NFL Preview, which was originally published before our reboot. The preview includes six studies of the biggest league-wide factors for regression.

We expect each preview to do a great job projecting what’s to come in each season. Just to make sure that’s the case, our work will be assessed at the end of the season. Hopefully, everyone will enjoy the information and learn from the research!
